Sauna after exercise: good idea or not?

Good for relaxation and circulation, not always smart right after strength training. How long you should wait.

Sauna and sport go well together, but order and timing matter. Straight from the squat rack into the heat is rarely the best idea.

Why it feels good

Heat relaxes your muscles, boosts circulation and helps you unwind after a session. Many athletes sleep better for it, and that is probably the most underrated recovery benefit there is.

Wait for your heart rate to come down

Your heart rate is already elevated after an intense session. A sauna raises it again. Stacking those two means unnecessary load, especially when you have also lost fluid.

So leave at least 10 to 20 minutes between your last set and the sauna. Shower first, drink something, let your breathing settle. Then go in.

Drink first, heat second

You have already lost half a litre of fluid or more during training. In the sauna another half litre is easy to add. Dehydration is the most common reason people feel rough after a sauna visit.

So drink before you go in, not only afterwards.

Strength training: better not immediately after

After heavy strength training there is something to bear in mind. There are indications that prolonged heat directly after resistance work does not help muscle recovery, and may even get slightly in the way. The research is not conclusive, but the practical takeaway is simple: if muscle growth is your main goal, schedule the sauna on a rest day or a few hours after training.

For endurance work, running or cycling, this matters far less.

Not before training

A sauna right before exercise is a bad idea. You start the session fatigued and with less fluid on board, and your strength and coordination are temporarily reduced. Save it for afterwards.

What a session looks like

  1. Train, and cool down properly
  2. Shower, drink half a glass to a full glass of water
  3. Wait 10 to 20 minutes
  4. Two rounds of 8 to 12 minutes, cooling down in between
  5. Drink properly again afterwards

The practical point of a sauna at home

The reason athletes skip it is almost always logistics. Driving somewhere after a training session simply does not happen.

A sauna tent in the garden changes that. You set it up while you train or cool down, and after half an hour of firing it is ready. That is exactly the waiting time you wanted to take anyway.
