Building your own sauna tent: can you, and should you?

Technically yes. Here is an honest breakdown of what it costs, how much work it is and where it usually goes wrong.

A sauna tent is essentially a well-insulated tent with a wood stove in it. That sounds like something you could build yourself, and technically that is true. The question is whether it is smart.

What you need

  • A frame that can handle the heat and the wind
  • Fabric with an insulating inner layer, because an ordinary tent will not hold 90 degrees
  • A wood stove suited to a small space
  • A chimney with a spark arrestor and a safe pass-through in the fabric
  • A fire-resistant flashing collar, heat-rated and properly fitted
  • Sauna stones, roughly 12 kg
  • A fire-resistant mat under the stove
  • A bench that copes with damp and heat

Roughly what it costs

Indicative Dutch prices for individual parts, excluding shipping and tools:

  • Second-hand or basic frame tent, suitable size: €150 to €400
  • Insulating fabric or blankets plus sewing: €100 to €300
  • Wood-fired sauna stove: €350 to €900
  • Chimney sections and spark arrestor: €80 to €200
  • Heat-rated flashing collar: €40 to €90
  • Sauna stones: €25 to €60
  • Fire-resistant mat: €30 to €80
  • Bench and small parts: €80 to €250

That totals roughly €855 to €2,280, with most self-builders landing around €1,100 to €1,400. Your own time comes on top, usually a weekend or two if everything goes well.

For comparison: a complete MOOSSE package starts at €1,349, including tent, stove, chimney and carry bags.

Where it usually goes wrong

Not at the tent. At the pass-through.

The point where the chimney passes through the fabric is the most dangerous part of the whole build. That is metal at several hundred degrees against textile. A collar that does not fit properly, shifts, or is not sufficiently heat-rated is exactly how tent fires start.

The second issue is carbon monoxide. A stove that does not draw properly, or a chimney that is too short or clogged with soot, can push combustion gases into the tent. You cannot smell carbon monoxide.

The third is insulation. An ordinary tent either never reaches temperature or holds it only briefly. That is why many self-build projects stall at 50 or 60 degrees instead of reaching up to 100°C.

When self-building does make sense

If you enjoy the building itself and the result is a bonus. If you already have experience with stoves and flue gas. Or if you want something very specific that is not sold, for instance a fixed size that fits exactly into a corner of your garden.

When it does not

If the goal is to save money, because that rarely works out. If you want to move it often: a self-build is almost always heavier and more awkward than a system designed for it. And if you are unsure about the pass-through or the flue, because that is not the component to practise on.

A middle road

You do not have to do all of it yourself. Plenty of people buy a tested stove with chimney and collar, then build their own structure around it. That takes the most dangerous part out of the equation and leaves the enjoyable part.

Whatever you choose: keep to the safety clearances, ensure ventilation, and never leave a burning stove unattended.
