What to look for in a sauna tent: the 8-point checklist

Stove, fabric, weight, safety and what is in the box: the eight points that matter when choosing a sauna tent.

Buying a sauna tent is a straightforward choice once you know what to look for. Most of the differences are not in the photos but in the stove, the material and what is or is not in the box. These are the eight points that matter, with how each one works at MOOSSE. All specifications in one place are on what is a sauna tent.

1. The stove: material and thickness

The stove decides how hot it gets and how long it lasts. Look at the steel (stainless or painted), the wall thickness and whether there are heat shields on the side facing the tent wall. A spark arrestor on the chimney is not a luxury.

At MOOSSE: stainless steel 430, 1.2 mm, heat shields on both sides and a 5-part chimney with spark arrestor.

2. Temperature and heat-up time

Ask not only how hot it gets but also how fast. A sauna tent that needs an hour gets used less than you think.

At MOOSSE: up to 100°C in about 30 minutes of firing. The exact time depends on the outside temperature, wind and dry wood.

3. Tent fabric and insulation

A single layer of fabric holds heat poorly. Check the number of layers, whether there is insulation and how the chimney passes through the tent.

At MOOSSE: three layers of Oxford 300D with cotton insulation. Why the chimney pass-through and the insulation matter so much is explained in building your own sauna.

4. Size and number of people

Look at the inside dimensions, not just the number of people on the box. Two people lying down is different from five people sitting.

At MOOSSE: 180 × 180 × 200 cm, for 2 to 5 people.

5. Weight and setup

If you want to take the sauna to a campsite or the water, every kilo counts. Look at the combined weight of tent and stove and the folded size.

At MOOSSE: tent 14 kg, stove 23 kg, folded 150 × 40 × 30 cm. With the pop-up frame the tent is up in 5 minutes.

6. Safe firing

A wood stove in a tent needs a few fixed rules. Keep the tent wall away from the stove, place the stove on a fire-resistant base, leave a ventilation opening open and never sleep in the tent while the stove is burning. A smoke and carbon monoxide alarm nearby and an extinguisher at hand are sensible.

Where you may burn wood differs per municipality and campsite. A sauna tent needs no building permit, but do check the local rules on wood burning. The most common mistakes are in 8 common sauna tent mistakes.

7. What is in the box?

Prices only compare once you know what is included. Stones, a bucket and ladle, a thermometer and a bench add up quickly.

At MOOSSE every package includes the tent, stove, chimney, carry bag and safety kit. Wellness+ and Complete add stones, bucket, thermometer, hourglass, wood and gloves, and Complete also a bench. See all packages side by side, or read what a sauna costs in total.

8. Delivery, warranty and service

You order a sauna tent online, so check the return period, the warranty and whether you can reach someone when something comes up.

At MOOSSE: free delivery in the Netherlands and Belgium, a 30-day return period, 2 years warranty on the stove and 1 year on the tent. Questions go through WhatsApp or email.
