Packing

Everything goes in two bags.

The tent and the frame go together in one bag that you carry with one hand. The stove is the heavy part: 23 kg of stainless steel, plus the chimney in five loose sections. That goes in a separate bag, so you never have to lift everything in one go.

  • Bag 1: tent, frame and pegs, 14 kg
  • Bag 2: stove, chimney sections and spark arrestor, 23 kg
  • Together they fill one boot with the back seat folded down
  • The stove is easier to lift with two people than alone

Before you go

Where can you actually set it up?

A mobile sauna is a wood stove with a chimney, and that makes it legally different from pitching a small tent. This is how it usually works in the Netherlands. If you mostly care about a sauna in your own garden, different and more relaxed rules apply.

On the campsite

Often allowed, but far from everywhere. Campsites have their own rules for open fire and wood stoves. Ask at reception before you unpack, and keep your distance from tents and caravans.

In the forest or a nature reserve

As a rule not allowed. Nature reserves and forests almost always ban open fire, especially in dry weather. Only do this on private land with explicit permission.

By the water

The best combination, and usually a question of who owns the land. On your own pond or a rented plot it is fine; on public beaches and recreational lakes almost never.

In your own garden

Here you have the most room. A tent that is set up temporarily does not, as a rule, fall under the permit requirement. Mind the safety distance and where the smoke blows towards the neighbours.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules differ per municipality, landowner and season, and during dry spells a temporary fire ban often applies.

The ritual

First you sweat, then you jump in.

Warm up in the tent, cool off in the lake, and head back to the heat together. That's the MOOSSE experience.

One more thing

Questions about the mobile sauna

Yes. The tent goes folded into a bag of 150 × 40 × 30 cm and the stove into a second bag. Together they fit in the boot of a normal family car, as long as you can fold the back seat down for the 150 cm length.

That depends entirely on the campsite. Many campsites do not allow open fire and wood stoves, or only in designated spots. Always ask the manager beforehand and keep a safe distance from your own tent and the neighbours'.

In the Netherlands open fire is banned on almost every beach and in nature reserves, and a wood stove usually falls under that. On your own land, or somewhere the owner gives permission, it is fine. Always check beforehand, including for protected Natura 2000 areas.

Setting up takes about 5 minutes, and firing up to 100°C takes about 30 minutes. Taking it down is quicker, but let the stove cool down completely first. When packing, allow about an hour between your last session and the moment everything is in the car.

You can pack it, but do not store it wet at home. Hang the tent up to dry within a day before it goes back in the bag for any length of time, otherwise you get mould and a musty smell in the fabric.
