Pop-up sauna

A pop-up sauna, from car boot to a hundred degrees.

Five minutes to set up, thirty minutes to heat. That is the whole story. No foundation, no electricity, no tools, no manual you have to read twice.

The first 35 minutes

What exactly happens, and when.

  1. 0 min

    Unpacking

Two bags out of the car. Tent on the spot where it will stand, stove next to it.

  2. 2 min

    Tent pops open

The frame is attached to the fabric and unfolds in one movement. Pegs in, guy lines tight.

  3. 5 min

    Stove and chimney

Stove on the fireproof mat in the tent, five chimney sections slid together, spark arrestor on top.

  4. 8 min

    Light it

Dry, untreated wood in the stove. Light it, close the door, let the draught get going.

  5. 20 min

    Add wood

Add wood once. The stones are now really getting up to temperature.

  6. 35 min

    First steam

Up to 100°C. Water on the stones, steam rising, and from here it is simply a sauna.

How it works

From bag to sauna: set up in 5 minutes and up to temperature within 30 minutes.

01

Bring it in the car

Folded into two carry bags. Tent and stove fit in any trunk.

02

Fire it up

Light the fire, close the door. Up to 100°C within 30 minutes, pure wood-fired warmth.

03

Sweat

Step inside, pour water on the stones, and enjoy a real sauna session.

The nuance

What a pop-up sauna does not mean.

Pop-up refers to the tent, not the heat. The frame opens in seconds and the tent is up within five minutes, but a wood stove simply needs time after that. You cannot shorten those thirty minutes of firing, and you do not want to: firing too hard gives you a glowing stove and a tent that is still cold.

What you can do is make those thirty minutes useful. Most people set up the tent, light the stove and go and do something else in the meantime. Lay out the towels, fill a bucket, sort out the cool-down spot. When you come back it is a hundred degrees.

A second point: taking it down takes longer than putting it up. The tent is folded in ten minutes, but the stove has to cool down completely first and that takes three quarters of an hour. Plan for that if you have to be somewhere, because a hot stove goes nowhere.

Lay out before you start

  • Dry, untreated wood, about an armful per session
  • Firelighters or birch bark and a lighter
  • A bucket of water and a ladle for the stones
  • Two towels per person and something to drink
  • A place to cool down: garden hose, shower or the water

One more thing

Questions about setting up and heating

Setting up takes about 5 minutes. Then you fire the stove, and after about 30 minutes the tent reaches up to 100°C. From unpacking to the first steam you are busy for about 35 minutes.

That the frame is attached to the fabric and opens in one movement, like a pop-up tent. You do not slide loose poles through sleeves or remember a sequence. Setting up becomes a matter of minutes instead of an afternoon.

No. The frame opens itself, you drive the pegs in by hand or with a stone, and you slide the chimney sections together. There is not a single screw in the whole system.

Yes. You can put the tent up alone. For the 23 kg stove a second person is nicer, especially when lifting it into the tent, but it can be done alone if you take it slowly.

The tent is folded in ten minutes. The limiting factor is the stove: it has to cool down completely first, which takes 30 to 45 minutes after the fire is out.
